On Tuesday, January 20, Dakota Access, LLC, filed an application with the Iowa Utilities Board for permission to condemn Iowa pocket option land to build the Bakken oil pipeline – a pipeline that would stretch 343 miles across Iowa’s land and rivers to carry up to 570,000 barrels of oil per day. Instead of reducing our dependence on fossil fuels, as we must for climate reasons, this project would increase global dependence on fossil fuels.
Now is the time to tell the Iowa Utilities Board that the project will not “promote the public convenience and necessity” and that Dakota Access, LLC, should not be given the right of eminent domain. We do not want to risk a billion-dollar oil spill here in Iowa, like the Mayflower, Arkansas oil spill, the Yellowstone River oil spill in Montana, or the Kalamazoo River oil spill in Michigan. We want to build our own clean energy future.
